This week, 450 boutique bosses, vendors, and service providers met in Dallas for the Boutique Summit 2018. I had the pleasure of teaming up with our VP of Client Success, Geoff Tease, and speaking at the event about the power of POS data as an independent retailer.
Leading up to our presentation, I also spent some time in the audience to soak up some knowledge from other speakers.
The sessions ranged from managing work-life balance to implementing a data-driven business strategy, but the important takeaways that spoke to me the most came from personal stories.
It was truly inspiring to hear these talented boutique bosses talk about trading in their day-jobs to create a boutique from scratch and grow their passion into a “day-dream”.
Here are 3 important takeaways from the Boutique Summit 2018:
1. Have a clear vision for yourself.
Ask yourself: “Where do I see myself and my business in a year, three years, and five years?” If you don’t have a clear answer, it’s time to think about your vision. Your vision should be tangible otherwise you’ll find yourself being pulled a million different directions. Focus your hustle toward achieving your vision and don’t waste your time on things that aren’t contributing to you and your business getting there.
2. Be able to say no.
REPEAT AFTER ME… NO. That’s right, you need to be able to say no. If something does not align with your vision and achieving your vision, don’t do it. It’s insanely hard to do, but crucial to your growth as a retailer.
3. Ditch your safety net.
I consider this takeaway a #ToughLove topic at the Summit. Many speakers got personal and shared their stories about how failure was not an option. These inspirational boutique owners created a profitable business because their families relied on them. Because they couldn’t afford failure, their hustle propelled them to success. They worked harder, pivoted when things didn’t work, and put their all into it because there was no other option. Think about your business without a back-up plan. You will find yourself more willing to do what other people won’t to get what you want. That will set you apart.
If you’re a Boutique owner and you didn’t make it to the Boutique Summit 2018, I recommend going to the Boutique Hub’s Facebook page and following them. Make it a point to sign up for next year as soon as tickets are available because investing in education is money well spent. We hope to see you there!
